The Ganges begins in the Himalaya mountain range and flows for 2500km to the Bay of Bengal. There are 84 ghats - stone steps leading down to the river - stretching for 7km in Varanasi, including two cremation ghats. Hindus also believe if you die in Varanasi your soul will be released from the cycle of reincarnation and you will achieve spiritual liberation, or moksha.
